By analyzing hundreds of thousands of messages, researchers warned that the conversational nature of these bots can reinforce psychological vulnerabilities rather than providing the guardrails we were promised.
This lack of a safety net is also manifesting in the digital economy. New data suggests that Google Search referrals to the web have plummeted, with AI-generated answers keeping users on the search page rather than sending them to original sources. Even more startling is that traffic coming back from AI source links currently accounts for less than 1% of total web traffic. We are entering a period of “AI insulation,” where the technology acts as a barrier between us and the rest of the world—whether that is the open web, the creative process of coding, or even our own mental health.
